VERIFIED evidence grade of this record

Kenneth Brian Edmonds, born in Indianapolis on April 10, 1959, learned songwriting as a shy teenager, took the stage name Babyface in Bootsy Collins's orbit, and served his apprenticeship in the bands Manchild and the Deele, where his partnership with Antonio 'L.A.' Reid began. As a writer-producer team, Edmonds and Reid helped define late-1980s and 1990s R&B, and in 1989 they founded LaFace Records, the Atlanta label that launched Toni Braxton, TLC, Usher, Outkast, and Pink. Babyface's own solo career ran in parallel — Tender Lover and For the Cool in You among his platinum albums — but his deepest imprint is the catalog he wrote and produced for others: Boyz II Men's 'End of the Road' and 'I'll Make Love to You,' Madonna's 'Take a Bow,' Whitney Houston's 'Exhale (Shoop Shoop),' and Mary J. Blige's 'Not Gon' Cry,' which he wrote and produced for the Waiting to Exhale soundtrack, a project he effectively authored end to end. Industry counts credit him with twenty-six number-one R&B hits and thirteen Grammy Awards, including an unmatched run of Producer of the Year honors in the mid-1990s, and with more than 125 Top 10 hits as writer or producer. His quiet, melody-first craft made him the era's trusted balladeer — the man other stars called when a song had to last.

Notes

Statistics: Born April 10, 1959, Indianapolis (Kenneth Brian Edmonds); co-founded LaFace Records with L.A. Reid in 1989; 13 Grammy Awards and the only producer to win Producer of the Year four times, three consecutively 1995–1997 (Milken Institute); credited with 26 No. 1 R&B hits as writer/producer (Congressional Record and industry biographies, accessed 2026-10-15; note some current label copy cites higher cumulative No. 1 totals — the conservative sourced figure is used here). · Curator's Judgment: DRAFT — Babyface is the quiet architect of modern R&B: LaFace built the house, and his ballads furnished a generation's emotional vocabulary.
