VERIFIED evidence grade of this record

Timothy Eugene Scott (born September 19, 1965, in North Charleston, South Carolina) is the United States senator from South Carolina and, in the Senate that has sat since January 2025, the only Black Republican in the chamber. He climbed the ladder rung by rung: Charleston County Council from 1995 to 2009, the South Carolina House from 2009 to 2011, and the U.S. House of Representatives from 2011 until January 2, 2013, when Governor Nikki Haley appointed him to the Senate seat vacated by Jim DeMint's resignation. He then won the 2014 special election and full terms in 2016 and 2022. Scott is the first Black senator from South Carolina — a state that sent Black representatives to the House during Reconstruction but had never sent a Black senator to Washington — and the first Black American to serve in both the House and the Senate. In May 2023 he launched a campaign for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, suspending it that November. With Booker, Warnock, Blunt Rochester, and Alsobrooks, he completes the five — the largest number of Black senators ever to serve simultaneously.

The record

Notes

Statistics: Appointed to the Senate January 2, 2013; sworn January 3, 2013 (Bioguide). First Black senator from South Carolina; only Black Republican in the Senate. Part of the verified five-senator spine (AP / USA Today, via the intake audit). · Curator's Judgment: DRAFT — for founder review: Scott's record carries the spine's tension in one biography: a descendant of the Reconstruction South's promise, holding a seat his state withheld for a century and a half, in the party his four colleagues across the aisle do not share. The graph files the fact pattern, not a verdict on it — five senators, one chamber, a first in the Republic's history. · Photo slot: CLEARED CANDIDATE — Wikimedia Commons File:Tim Scott official portrait.jpg, Public domain (United States Senate), license verified from Commons API metadata on 2026-10-15; not downloaded — visual pass follows merge per standing pattern.
