Everybody Hates Chris

CTL-E-5453 · Work · other · 2005–2009

PROVISIONAL evidence grade of this record

Everybody Hates Chris, created by Chris Rock and Ali LeRoi and narrated by Rock from his own teenage years in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, premiered on UPN on September 22, 2005, moved to The CW in the UPN/WB merger, and ended on May 8, 2009 — four seasons set in 1982–87, with Tyler James Williams as the young Chris, bussed to a whiter school across town and holding a family's economics in his head at all times. Its premiere was reported as the highest-rated comedy premiere in UPN's history. The form was the argument: a period, single-camera, narrated sitcom at a moment when the Black family comedy was presumed to be multi-camera and present-tense. It was nominated for the Golden Globe for Best Television Series — Musical or Comedy and for three Emmy Awards, and won NAACP Image Awards for LeRoi's writing and for Tichina Arnold and Tyler James Williams. In this graph it stands as the shelf's proof that the Black sitcom could do memory — could be set deliberately in the past and narrated like a memoir — a decade before the form's streaming-era flowering.

Notes

Statistics: UPN/CW, 2005–2009; 4 seasons (Wikipedia). Creator Chris Rock holds no graph Person record — flagged as a future candidate, not minted in this Works wave. Filed as Work/other: schema v0.2.6 carries no television subtype, and none was invented inside this merge (schema changes are a separate, reviewed step). · Curator's Judgment: DRAFT — for founder review: Rock narrated his own childhood like a man reading a ledger — every joke itemized against what things cost. The record keeps the economics: this is a sitcom about a family's arithmetic, and its tenderness is in the math. · Photo slot: HELD — poster/key art and production stills for this title are copyrighted studio material and were NOT pulled (per CTL-PHOTO-001 and the wave brief: never force non-free key art); no cleared Commons image was verified for this title in this run. Slot honestly HELD pending a cleared visual.
