PROVISIONAL evidence grade of this record

Moesha, created by Ralph Farquhar, Sara V. Finney, and Vida Spears, aired on UPN from January 23, 1996, to May 14, 2001 — six seasons, 127 episodes starring the singer Brandy as Moesha Mitchell, a teenager in Los Angeles's Leimert Park navigating family, school, and first independence in diary-narrated episodes. The series had been ordered as a CBS pilot and passed over; UPN picked it up as a midseason replacement, and it became the young network's biggest success and one of the largest hits of the network's entire run — a frequently cited case of an established network misreading a Black-led property its hungrier rival built a night around. It spun off The Parkers, extending its world, and its co-creators Finney and Spears are identified in Spears's biography as the first African-American female writing team in television. For this graph, set in Leimert Park — a real Black cultural district the series put on the national map weekly — Moesha is the teen-sitcom shelf's cornerstone: a Black girl's interior life, treated as sufficient subject for six seasons of network television.

Notes

Statistics: UPN, 1996–2001; 127 episodes (Wikipedia). The 'first African-American female writing team' claim is carried as attributed to Spears's biography, per the research file. Filed as Work/other: schema v0.2.6 carries no television subtype, and none was invented inside this merge (schema changes are a separate, reviewed step). · Curator's Judgment: DRAFT — for founder review: Moesha's diary device was the tell: the show trusted a Black teenage girl's narration to organize a network's week. UPN did, and it was the smartest bet the network ever made. The record files the bet and the misread that preceded it. · Photo slot: HELD — poster/key art and production stills for this title are copyrighted studio material and were NOT pulled (per CTL-PHOTO-001 and the wave brief: never force non-free key art); no cleared Commons image was verified for this title in this run. Slot honestly HELD pending a cleared visual.
