Ruff Ryders is the Yonkers, New York hip-hop name that is two things at once: Ruff Ryders Entertainment, the record label and management company founded in 1988 by siblings Joaquin 'Waah' Dean, Darin 'Dee' Dean and Chivon Dean, and the loose-knit collective of the label's core signees that the same name denotes. The Deans first built their reputation managing DMX and The Lox; after DMX's breakthrough, the company opened its own label imprint through Interscope Records. The collective announced itself with the compilation Ryde or Die Vol. 1 (April 27, 1999), which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, was certified platinum by the RIAA on June 2, 1999, and carried Eve's first appearance as a Ruff Ryder — the 'First Lady' role she built her career on. The Deans' nephew Swizz Beatz was the roster's principal producer. Three further Ryde or Die volumes followed through 2005. In 2010 the founders revamped the brand as the distribution venture Ruff Ryders Indy; one account of that move calls it the end of Ruff Ryders Entertainment, while the label's reference entry still lists its status as active — the conflict is carried openly in this packet.
