The Motor Row District is Chicago's landmark automobile-row district along South Michigan Avenue between roughly 22nd and 25th Streets, with related buildings on Indiana and Wabash Avenues, on the Near South Side. Built out between 1905 and 1936, it is the largest intact early automobile row in the United States: at its peak, 116 makes of automobiles — Ford, Buick, Cadillac, Hudson, Studebaker, Packard, and dozens more — were sold from its showrooms. The district's Black cultural weight is equally specific: the Chicago Defender was headquartered on the Row, and Chess Records stood at 2120 South Michigan, itself a Chicago landmark since 1990. The Row declined from the Great Depression and the Second World War as the industry moved outward. The district was designated a Chicago Landmark on December 13, 2000, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places on November 18, 2002; recent redevelopment has recast it as a music and entertainment district.
