The Chicago Sky are a professional women's basketball team based in Chicago and a member of the Women's National Basketball Association's Eastern Conference. In February 2005, NBA commissioner David Stern announced that Chicago had been awarded a WNBA expansion franchise; the team name and logo debuted at the Adler Planetarium on September 20, 2005, with former NBA player and coach Dave Cowens as the first head coach and general manager. The Sky played their first season in 2006 at the UIC Pavilion, finishing 5–29 after selecting Candice Dupree with the franchise's first college draft pick. Home courts moved to Allstate Arena in Rosemont for 2010 and to Wintrust Arena in the South Loop before the 2018 season. The Elena Delle Donne era brought four straight playoff appearances from 2013 to 2016 and the franchise's first Finals berth in 2014. On October 17, 2021, the Sky won their first WNBA championship, defeating the Phoenix Mercury 3–1 in the Finals and clinching at home; Kahleah Copper was Finals MVP of a team built around Chicago-area native Candace Parker, guards Courtney Vandersloot and Allie Quigley, and coach James Wade. In June 2025 the Sky retired Quigley's No. 14, the franchise's first retired number, and in 2025 the team also played the first WNBA game held at the United Center, drawing a franchise-record crowd of more than 19,000.

Notes
Afro American Encyclopedia of Sports roster CTL-SPE-0370 (team, Basketball, status roster — 'Wave 1 staged candidate — name and provenance only; head audit pending'). TYPING: Organization / subtype 'other', mirroring the graph's sports-team precedent (Harlem Globetrotters CTL-E-6967, Chicago Bulls CTL-E-5503). Curator's Judgment (DRAFT): The Sky are Chicago's WNBA institution and the packet's anchor — an independently owned expansion franchise whose 2021 title run, built around a Naperville-raised superstar's homecoming and a homegrown backcourt, is the city's defining women's basketball story; Parker's homecoming title itself is carried on her own record (CTL-E-5584) and referenced here, per the packet brief.
