The Divisions
CultureTechLens is Chicago’s Black cultural intelligence platform — research, stories, and a monthly Index on Black history, music, sports, and film. Every claim graded, every source named, every photograph cited.
The record is kept in desks. Each CultureTechLens division is one archive with one job — a body of records it builds, grades, and publishes in the open. Each desk answers to a short code — BCDB, BMDA, EAA, CBSA, PRESS, GAMES — the same codes carried in CultureTechLens citation and dataset records, and now the address of its public page. Every page states, on its face, what the archive holds, who it serves, what is already published from the desk, and what is still being built. Where a count appears, its ledger is named; where no count has been generated yet, the page says so instead of rounding.

The six desks
- BCDB — Black Cultural Biography Database — the biography desk: evidence-graded life records. Status: in preparation — 520 encyclopedia entries staged (staged encyclopedia census, classification sitting, October 2026); a published preview is live.
- BMDA — Black Music Discography Archive — the discography desk: labels, sessions, and the review canon — Chicago soul, gospel, blues, house, jazz, and steppin’, the R&B steppers tradition. Status: building — its research constellation and briefs are published.
- EAA — Essential Albums Archive — the canon desk: the essential albums, rated and argued, grading on the page. Status: building — its lists are published.
- CBSA — Chicago Black Sports Archive — the sports desk: the Negro Leagues, the Chicago American Giants, and Black Chicago’s athletic record. Status: building — its record page and graph records are published.
- PRESS — Historical Black Publications — the press desk: the Chicago Defender, Johnson Publishing Company, Ebony, Jet, and the Black press record. Status: building — dossiers, briefs, and a definitive guide are published.
- GAMES — CTL Games Division — the games desk: Bid Whist, Spades, and the card-table traditions of Black gatherings. Status: in formation — the first desk named before its series; its page says so plainly.
How the desks publish
A desk publishes as its record is graded — findings first, each with its evidence underneath, in the same grade language used across the site. Each desk page opens a post stream, “From this desk,” seeded with the work that desk has already published elsewhere on the site, so nothing here starts from an empty shelf unless the page says it does. Division-level counts join the site’s generated counts pipeline as a follow-up; until then, scope is stated in words and censuses are marked in preparation — no desk borrows another ledger’s numbers.

Trust & evidence
Evidence before authority. CultureTechLens publishes its methods, its limits, and its corrections alongside its findings. Claims carry grades — VERIFIED, SUPPORTED, PROVISIONAL, DISPUTED, UNRESOLVED — and unknowns are never reported as zero.
Every claim graded. Every source named. Every correction public — see the corrections log.
