PRESS — Historical Black Publications

CultureTechLens is Chicago’s Black cultural intelligence platform — research, stories, and a monthly Index on Black history, music, sports, and film. Every claim graded, every source named, every photograph cited. PRESS is its desk for the publications that carried Black Chicago to itself — and the nation to the truth.

The PRESS desk holds the historical Black publications collection: the Chicago Defender, which called a people north; Johnson Publishing Company and its Ebony and Jet; Negro Digest / Black World; the Associated Negro Press wire that fed Black papers nationwide — what each publication was, who built it, how it circulated, and where its archive lives now. It serves press historians, journalism students, librarians answering the “where do I even find this?” question, and researchers tracing a story to its first printing.

Status: building

This desk starts with the deepest published base of the six — a research hub, a definitive guide, two dossiers, and a run of briefs are already live (below). Its collection census is in preparation and joins the generated counts pipeline as a follow-up; the page claims no count the pipeline has not generated.

Trust & evidence

Evidence before authority. CultureTechLens publishes its methods, its limits, and its corrections alongside its findings. Claims carry grades — VERIFIED, SUPPORTED, PROVISIONAL, DISPUTED, UNRESOLVED — and unknowns are never reported as zero.

Every claim graded. Every source named. Every correction public — see the corrections log.
