BCDB — Black Cultural Biography Database

CultureTechLens is Chicago’s Black cultural intelligence platform — research, stories, and a monthly Index on Black history, music, sports, and film. Every claim graded, every source named, every photograph cited. The Biography Database is its life-records desk.

The BCDB holds full-length, evidence-graded biographies: a person’s record built from named sources, with contested claims carried as contested and gaps stated as gaps — the depth behind the site’s one-line summaries. It serves researchers and students writing about a life, librarians building subject guides, journalists checking a fact before deadline, and families looking for their own people in the record.

Status: in preparation

Stated plainly: the BCDB’s entries are staged, not yet published. The staged encyclopedia census taken for the October 2026 classification sitting stands at 520 entries — the prototype, scale, Black Medicine, and Historical Documents cohorts — held in the staged ledger under that census. Publication follows the canonical merge the sitting authorized, which rules the entries’ IDs and grades. Nothing staged is counted here as published, and this page will change its status line the day the first cohort ships.

From this desk

  • Black Medicine — A Librarian Slice (Preview) — ten entries from the staged Black Medicine cohort, published as a preview for librarians with the build’s open classification gate stated on its face — the BCDB’s method, visible now.
  • The Knowledge Graph — the published entity record the biographies deepen: the people of Black Chicago, graded and linked, live today.
  • John H. Johnson — a biography brief from the topic-brief series, where BCDB-length lives are first drafted and graded.
  • Research Briefs — the briefs index; the biography (TB) series publishes there as entries are completed.

Trust & evidence

Evidence before authority. CultureTechLens publishes its methods, its limits, and its corrections alongside its findings. Claims carry grades — VERIFIED, SUPPORTED, PROVISIONAL, DISPUTED, UNRESOLVED — and unknowns are never reported as zero.

Every claim graded. Every source named. Every correction public — see the corrections log.
