BMDA — Black Music Discography Archive
CultureTechLens is Chicago’s Black cultural intelligence platform — research, stories, and a monthly Index on Black history, music, sports, and film. Every claim graded, every source named, every photograph cited. The Discography Archive is its record of the records.
The BMDA holds the discography: who recorded what, where, for which label, with whom in the room — and the review canon that argues what the records mean. Its strands are Chicago soul and gospel; the blues; house; jazz; and steppin’ — Chicago’s R&B steppers tradition, a first-class tradition of Black Chicago music and the founder’s own home ground as a DJ. Steppers music is a discography of its own: records become steppers’ records by being danced to, and the DJs who play the sets are the scene’s editors and historians. The BMDA names steppin’ as a strand on purpose, and builds its session record the same way.
The desk serves DJs building sets from the real record, collectors and reissue researchers checking a pressing or a personnel line, students of Chicago music, and anyone who has ever been told a wrong date for a record they love.

Status: building
The archive’s discography census is in preparation — no generated count exists for this desk yet, so its scope is stated in words: the published music research below, the MUS-series briefs, and the constellation record are the desk’s live base, and division figures join the site’s generated counts pipeline as a follow-up rather than being estimated here.

- The Steppers’ Economy (CTL-RB-MUS-000009) — what the steppers scene earns, spends, and sustains.
- Chicago Steppin’ · CTL-E-0318 — the tradition’s record in the knowledge graph.
- Research Briefs — the MUS series publishes here as the discography’s findings are graded.

Trust & evidence
Evidence before authority. CultureTechLens publishes its methods, its limits, and its corrections alongside its findings. Claims carry grades — VERIFIED, SUPPORTED, PROVISIONAL, DISPUTED, UNRESOLVED — and unknowns are never reported as zero.
