CBSA — Chicago Black Sports Archive

CultureTechLens is Chicago’s Black cultural intelligence platform — research, stories, and a monthly Index on Black history, music, sports, and film. Every claim graded, every source named, every photograph cited. The Chicago Black Sports Archive is its sports desk.

The CBSA holds Black Chicago’s athletic record: the Negro Leagues and the Chicago American Giants; Rube Foster, who built a league when the majors barred the door; the boxers, ballplayers, and Olympians the city produced; and the parks and venues that held them. Much of this record survives only in the Black press and in family keeping — which is exactly why a desk, and not a shelf in somebody else’s archive, keeps it. The desk serves sports historians, Negro Leagues researchers, teachers, and the families of the athletes themselves.

Status: building

Stated plainly: this desk’s published base is the thinnest of the research desks — today it is the sports record page and its graph records below. The CBSA census is in preparation; no count is claimed until the generated pipeline carries one. The build starts from the strongest ground there is: Foster and the Giants are already in the record.

Trust & evidence

Evidence before authority. CultureTechLens publishes its methods, its limits, and its corrections alongside its findings. Claims carry grades — VERIFIED, SUPPORTED, PROVISIONAL, DISPUTED, UNRESOLVED — and unknowns are never reported as zero.
