Missy Elliott
VERIFIED evidence grade of this record
Melissa Arnette Elliott, known as Missy Elliott, is a rapper, singer, songwriter and producer from Portsmouth, Virginia, who reshaped hip-hop's sound and image from the late 1990s onward. After writing and producing for other artists, she emerged as a solo star with Supa Dupa Fly (1997), made with childhood friend and production partner Timbaland, and followed it with a run of platinum albums including Da Real World, Miss E… So Addictive and Under Construction. Singles such as "Get Ur Freak On," "Work It" and "Lose Control" paired futuristic production with playful, virtuosic rapping, while her music videos reset the visual standard for the genre. She was the first woman rapper inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, in 2019, and in 2023 became the first female rapper inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Notes
Statistics: Inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2023 (Performer category, inducted by Queen Latifah), the first female rapper so honored (Rock & Roll Hall of Fame); holds the record for most platinum albums by a woman rapper, and all six of her 1997–2005 studio albums were certified platinum (Rock Hall; Pollstar); first woman rapper in the Songwriters Hall of Fame, 2019 (Pollstar). GRAMMY win totals conflict across consulted sources (four vs five) and are not asserted here. · Curator's Judgment: DRAFT — DRAFT — Elliott's catalog is a one-woman argument that experimentation and commercial dominance are the same project. For CTL she anchors the Virginia creative corridor and the women-producers lineage the archive keeps tracing. · Photo slot: CLEARED — Wikimedia Commons File:Missy Elliott 2006.jpg, Romana Pierzga, CC BY-SA 2.0, verified via Commons API 2026-10-15; direct URL https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/92/Missy_Elliott_2006.jpg?utm_source=commons.wikimedia.org&utm_campaign=imageinfo&utm_content=thumbnail_unscaled; master in packet photos/ as missy-elliott.jpg.
